Your hair fall might not be stressful for you, but when you see hair fall in your toddlers, this brings you to real shock. Hair loss is common in children it becomes a frustrating thing for parents when you are not expecting hair fall from your children. There are different reasons for baldness in adulthood, but when the symptoms in childhood remain unnoticed it can lead to different hair problems later in life.

Some of the common symptoms vanish with time as the hair grows back. However, on the other hand, many children have severe hair problems and have permanent thin hair or prominent bald spots on the scalp. For parents seeing their children having thin hair on their head becomes frightening, however, when this problem is diagnosed and treated properly, it may lessen the severe risks.

Well, the causes of hair loss are not life-threatening, but the loss of hair can be stressful for children as it affects their emotional well-being and drains their self-confidence. It becomes really hard for them to accept that they will become bald in adulthood. There are many psychological effects on children, thus it is important to go to the doctor if you see any hair problem in your children.

Causes of Hair Loss

In children, hair problems can be due to infections in the scalp or other problems. However, common causes are mentioned below.

Physical Problems

Pulling the hair is a common habit of infants same as sucking the thumb. When children become two or three, with time this problem disappears just like the other habits. Well, some of the kids keep pulling their hair until they turn four or five. Usually, parents ignore this problem, they never know it is the reason for hair loss in children. Parents are recommended to keep the hair of their children short in childhood or move their attention to something else.

Traction Alopecia

This is a very common problem in children which is because of tight braids and ponytails. Moreover, in infants, this problem occurs when the children pull back their hair by rubbing the hair against the mattress. These issues cause a weak scalp and loss of hair.

Reactive Causes

Another big reason for hair fall is due to some chronic illness, cancer in childhood is the huge cause here. Children usually experience hair loss after treatments like chemo or radiation. Cancer is not the only cause however, its treatments are the actual cause.

Infections

The ringworms in the scalp are one of the biggest reasons for hair loss most of the parents don’t know about. They are easy to identify in the scalp, as these ringworms cause hair fall, a red circular lesion, and scaly boundaries that lead to itching.

Autoimmune Problems

A common autoimmune problem known as alopecia areata is another cause of hair fall in children. This problem causes round patches on the scalp causing complete hair loss on the scalp or other parts of the body. In this problem, the immune system of children attacks the hair follicles.
